Austin Bar and AYLA Announce Partnership with Akins High School

The Austin Bar Association and the Austin Young Lawyers Association have launched a unique partnership with Akins High School. Under the new partnership, Akins will launch a law internship/practicum, through Akins Career and Technical Education program, or CTE.

The new program, called “Legal Eagles” will consist of 10 “top-notch” students, who have already been selected through a series of interviews and applications.

Once the program begins, Austin Bar and AYLA members will work to make sure students are gaining practical skills in the legal field. Attorney volunteers will help the students by evaluating their work and allowing students to shadow them at the courthouse once a week (whether it’s for a trial, hearing, plea bargain, or docket call).

Akins also hopes to conduct its first mock trial presentation within the next school year. The school has a brand new $19,000 courtroom to use. Akins High School is 70% Hispanic and 70% free/reduced lunches. More than 25 students applied for the inaugural “Legal Eagles” program, but only ten were selected.

Volunteer dates for fall are as follows: Sept. 15, Sept. 23, Sept. 29, Oct. 7, Oct. 14, Oct. 28, Nov. 12, Dec. 1, and Dec. 9.  For more details, please contact Debbie Kelly.
