Member Spotlight: Meet Eric Hansum

Eric Hansum jpgHow long have you been a member of the Austin Bar and what is your favorite thing about the organization?
I have been a member since 2004. I love the employment law CLE lunches on-site. Over the years, those meetings have been a great avenue for meeting and keeping in touch with other colleagues in the same field.

What do you like most about being in the legal field?
You have the opportunity to change lives and impact future decisions for your clients. I became a solo practitioner a while back with a focus on employment and healthcare law. Since that time, I have really enjoyed learning the business side of the practice of law. And by being a solo, I have been able to handle cases in different areas that interest me that I may not have been able to as part of a large firm.

If you weren’t a lawyer what would you be?
Football coach. I love college football.

What’s the craziest job (other than lawyer) that you’ve had?
I worked in the mail room of a company before coming to law school. There was never a dull moment on things that had to be covered outside of just delivering mail.

If you were a character in a movie or a TV show, which character would you be?
I really like Peter Quill’s character in the Guardians of the Galaxy. Quill is a master strategist who ultimately finds a higher purpose after years of wandering. In the end, he tried to protect those he loved at all costs.

As part of the #austinbarinaction campaign, how are you making your world a better place to be?
I volunteer to speak to different groups on current employment or healthcare issues.
