Austin Bar Sweeps 2016 Stars of Texas Bars Awards

258A1743The Austin Bar Association was awarded six Stars of Texas Bars Awards at the State Bar of Texas Annual Meeting. These awards ranged from individual article recognition to the Partnership Award to the Award of Merit. The awards were accepted at the Bar Leaders Recognition Luncheon on June 16.

The Austin Bar Association won the following awards:

Award of Merit (awarded for overall programming and projects)
Made up of more than 4,000 attorneys from the Austin Area, the Austin Bar offered more than 8,700 hours of CLE to over 5,000 attendees, offered 33 law students free membership, organized free legal clinics for veterans which helped more than 2,300 veterans since its inception. The Austin Bar organized networking, social, and volunteer events, held a six-month leadership academy, engaged local youth with Law Day, and much more.

Star of Achievement for the Self-Represented Litigant Project (awarded for an outstanding project among bar associations in all divisions)
The Austin Bar in Action’s Self-Represented Litigant Project assists self-represented litigants through the Travis County Law Library and Self Help Center. Volunteer attorneys are in the Center almost daily to answer questions, help fill out forms, assist with pro se litigants, and more.

Outstanding Partnership Award for the Akins High School Legal Eagles Program (awarded for a noteworthy partnership between a local bar and a non-legal entity)
The unique partnership with Akins High School’s Legal Eagles provides students with practical knowledge about the legal field and how to become an attorney. Students learn about the judicial system and profession by interacting with judges, prosecutors, and defense attorneys. These students are in the top 10 percent of the class and the first in their families to attend college.
