Time to sign up for Committees!

It’s that time of year again – time to sign up for Committees! There are a few changes to the Committees for the upcoming bar year, so take a look at the options available for you to join!

AUSTIN ADOPTION DAY

Coordinates the annual Adoption Day event, including organizing bear and book drives, gathering donations of food, balloons, and gift basket items. Interested committee members may have opportunity to handle a pro bono case.

BENCH BAR CONFERENCE

Organizes and implements the annual conference for Travis County lawyers and judges. Committee members create the full-day conference program, including developing a theme, identifying topics, and recruiting speakers.

CLE PROGRAMS

Develops and organizes CLE opportunities including the monthly “Members Only Fourth Friday Free CLE” to bring the best and most up-to-date topics and speakers to the membership.

Committee Flyer PRINTCOMMUNICATIONS

Creates and implements policies and procedures for the Austin Lawyer monthly magainze, the Bar Code weekly e-bulletin, the association website, and the use of social media. The committee also helps identify topics and recruit writers for articles.

DIVERSITY FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

Manages the Diversity Fellowship Program, which offers summer internships to minority law school students. Participants intern for the Travis County District Judges and for a private law firm.

FEE DISPUTE

Mediates and/or arbitrates fee disputes submitted by clients, attorneys, the courts, and the District 9 Grievance Committee.

FITNESS

Organizes attorney teams for a variety of community fitness events, such as the Capitol 10K, the Austin Heart Walk, and Mamma Jamma ride. In addition, the committee occasionally offers CLE and fitness together.

FOUNDATION GALA

Plans and produces the Austin Bar’s biggest event, an annual gala to raise money for the Austin Bar Foundation and all of its charitable entities like Adoption Day, the Self Represented Litigant Project, and the Free Legal Advice Clinic for Veterans.

LAW-RELATED EDUCATION IN SCHOOLS

Plans and implements educational programs aimed at school-aged children. Programs include “Leapholes,” “Pick Me! A Jury of My Peers,” and “I Was the First. Vote for Me!”  Also organizes the Law Day essay and poster contests, and partners with Bookspring to provide books for children at the Travis County Courthouse.

MENTORING PROGRAM

Ensures the high standards of the Austin legal community carry forward in each “generation” of new attorneys that enter into practice by offering bi-monthly meetings between “mentors” and “mentees.” These lunch meetings usually feature a notable special guest speaker from the legal community.

SOCIAL

The Social Committee works to create networking and social activities to promote lasting friendships and business connection between bar members.  The committee will plan a number of social events throughout the year.
