New Construction Law Specialization for Texas Attorneys

On October 17, 2016, 105 Texas attorneys sat for the first Board Certification exam in Texas for the new Construction Law Specialization.  Texas is only the 2nd state, after Florida, to have a board certification for construction lawyers. More than 70,000 attorneys are licensed to practice law in the state of Texas. Only 7,000 are Board Certified in one of 21 different specializations. Construction Law is now the 22nd specialization. Within the Texas legal community, Board Certification means an attorney has substantial, relevant experience in a select field of law and has demonstrated through that experience, continuing legal education and testing, that he or she has devoted extraordinary focus and competence a particular area of the law.   This designation sets them apart as being an attorney with a very high commitment to excellence in their area of law.

Under the leadership of Austin attorneys Jason Spencer and Carson Fisk the State Bar of Texas Construction Law Section appointed a six-member Specialization Committee in 2014 to submit an application to the Texas Board of Legal Specialization (TBLS) for a construction law specialty. The Texas Supreme Court approved the new Construction Law Standards last year and the first group of Board Certified construction lawyers will be inducted in February, 2017.

“We were very excited to finally get our Board Certification goal achieved.” said Spencer. “We have our own unique statutes and body of case law. We are the 8th  largest Section of the Texas State Bar. The only surprise should be what took us so long?”
