Austin Lawyers Complete Wildfire Legal Clinics
After 60 days of providing free legal services to the people of Bastrop County, the Central Texas Wildfire Legal Response Team announced today that it will be discontinuing its daily free legal clinics at the FEMA Disaster Recovery Center effective immediately. With assistance of more than 100 attorney volunteers from Travis, Bastrop, Hays, and Williamson Counties, the Legal Response Team was able to help over 700 families in the areas affected most by the Labor Day wildfires, including families in Bastrop County and Western Travis County.
The committee was created on Sept. 5 by Austin Bar Association President David Chamberlain in cooperation with the Bastrop County Bar Association, led by its president, David Collins. The chairs of the committee are Austin attorneys David Courreges, Karin Crump, and Amy Welborn.
In addition to the continuously operated free legal clinics in Bastrop County, the Legal Response Team was responsible for several programs associated with the recovery effort. The programs included a food and clothing drive, a Volunteer Training CLE, a 120-page Volunteer Attorney Disaster Training Manual, evening clinics in both Western Travis County and Bastrop, and four public service announcements that will air on various media outlets across the State.
The committee will continue to operate and will be establishing protocols for disaster response as well as looking into some legislative initiatives that will better protect victims in the time of disaster.
Thank you to everyone who participated in the assistance and recovery of those affected by the Central Texas wildfires! Your quick response to the community's need are greatly appreciated by the Austin Bar Association, Bastrop County Bar Association, and the people of Bastrop County and Western Travis County.
