Leadership Austin: Engage Speaker Series Breakfast, March 3

Location: Chez Zee, 5406 Balcones Drive
Cost: $25 ($20 for members of the Essential Class Alumni Association)
Time: 7:30 to 8:00 a.m. – Networking and Breakfast;
8:00 to 9:00 a.m. – Presentation
The most recent available American Hospital Association survey reports that Central Texas hospitals spent almost $500 million to care for the un- and under-insured in Central Texas. Historically, teaching hospitals, academic physicians, and residency programs form the backbone of the nation’s healthcare safety net. Teaching hospitals, which represent 30 percent of all hospitals, provide 80 percent of the charity care delivered in the country. Recent news has highlighted a potential affiliation agreement between the Seton Family of Hospitals and the University of Texas that would allow the Seton system to serve as the primary teaching hospitals for an Austin-based medical school. Where does this potential agreement stand? What are the advantages and disadvantages of a regional medical school in Central Texas, and how might it impact the healthcare safety net in this region?
Speakers:
- Susan Davenport - Vice President, Business Retention and Expansion, Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce
- Dr. Sam Shomaker - Seton Family of Hospitals
- Discussion moderated by Jim Walker - Executive Director, Central Texas Sustainability Indicators Project

National Healthcare Decision Day Preparation, March 5
Date: Thursday, March 5
Location: Seton's Administrative Office Building, 1345 Philomena St.
Time: 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Cost: Free
CLE: 1 hour

Seton Family of Hospitals is partnering with AYLA for National Healthcare Decision Day on Thursday, April 16. Healthcare Decision Day is a nationwide effort to call attention to the importance of every adult taking the time to complete Advanced Directives. These directives allow individuals to make healthcare choices prior to a time when they may lose capacity to make healthcare decisions. Some studies show that as many as 80 percent of adults do not have Advanced Directives! AYLA would like to be part of changing that statistic and helping people understand that it is never too soon to put your wishes in writing. Seton and AYLA will be conducting a series of "Education Day" workshops during the week of April 13 through 17 and are looking for attorneys who can volunteer two hours of time during that week to assist with the workshops.
The training will provide education on the following topics:
- Four Types of Advance Directives: Directive to Physicians Family
or Surrogates, Medical Power of Attorney, Out-of-Hospital
Do-Not-Resuscitate Order, Declaration for Mental Health Treatment
- How to complete the forms for these Advance Directives
- Witnessing requirements for the forms
- When the directives are/are not in effect
- Process for resolving conflicts that may arise at the end-of-life
Please RSVP to Julie Wright at jwright@fulbright.com if you plan to attend the training and would like to volunteer for two hours the week of April 13 through 17.

Women's Resource Fair Needs Your Help, March 28
Date: Tuesday, March 24
Location: Austin Bar Association, 816 Congress Ave., Suite 700
The Austin Young Lawyers Association is holding the second annual Women's Resource Fair for homeless and low-income women on Saturday, March 28 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. at the Schmidt-Jones Family Life Center, 1300 Lavaca Street (Across from the First United Methodist Church).
Last year, 130 homeless and low-income women and children came to the fair and were able to access medical care, social services, resume writing workshops, and clothing in addition to legal services provided by 20 lawyer volunteers. Even more attendees are expected this year. In addition to the services from last year, dental care, hair stylists and others will be added.
Like last year, attendees will be able to access a legal clinic staffed with lawyer volunteers. It will be a one-day only event for the lawyers; they'll just be there to counsel and advise. Any follow-up that's needed will be handled by Texas RioGrande Legal Aid or by a referral to Volunteer Legal Services. Lawyers will be needed for morning (9 a.m. to 12 p.m.) and afternoon (12 p.m. to 3 p.m.) shifts, but of course, if anyone wants to stay all day, that's fine too! Contact Heather Godwin at hgodwin@trla.org to volunteer for the legal clinic, indicating which shift you are available for.
Also needed:
- Volunteers to help set up on Friday afternoon/evening and to break down after the event on Saturday afternoon. Volunteers are also needed throughout the day on Saturday to help with registration, intake, childcare, and the clothing closet. Please contact Lauren Kleine or Cindy Tom at womensresourcefair@hotmail.com or 343-7887 to volunteer.
- Clothing donation are needed for this year's clothing closet. Women's business casual attire (especially larger sizes) and children's clothes are needed most. Please bring all donations by Friday, March 27 to the Austin Bar Association office at 816 Congress Ave., Suite 700. Please contact Michelle McFadyen at Michelle@austinbar.org or 472-0279 x111 with questions.
