AYLA Seeks Donations for Toiletries Drive

AYLA is sponsoring a toiletries drive through March 19 to benefit both the clients of Caritas of Austin and the homeless and battered women who attend AYLA’s annual Women’s Resource Fair on March 27. The goal is simple: collect as many toiletries as possible for individuals who cannot afford the everyday luxury of shampoo, soap, toothpaste, cosmetics, etc. AYLA welcomes cash donations (made payable to the AYLA Foundation) and the following unopened items:

  • shampoo and conditioner
  • soap
  • toothpaste and toothbrushes
  • moisturizers
  • cosmetics
  • deodorant
  • disposable razors
  • other similar items
This is the time to get rid of those free hotel toiletries and cosmetics-counter samples. In a prior drive, AYLA collected more than 1,000 pounds of toiletries and $1,300 in cash. We need your help to do that again!

If your office has a collection sponsor, drop your donations off at your office as directed by your sponsor. If not, drop your donations off at the Austin Bar Association’s offices at 816 Congress Avenue, Suite 700. If you have any questions, contact Kennon Peterson at kennonpeterson@hotmail.com. Thanks in advance for your support!

Celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Bench Bar Conference

Join the Austin Bar Association and the Austin Young Lawyers Association in celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Bench Bar Conference April 30 at the Austin Country Club. To honor this milestone, organizers have designed a program to encourage discussion between the bench and bar regarding practice in Travis County through panel presentations with audience participation and collaboration.

In addition, this year's luncheon will be in conjunction with Law Day, featuring Justice Eva Guzman of the Texas Supreme Court as the keynote speaker.

Close to 30 judges will be attending this year. After a full day of CLE, attendees will be treated to a wine tasting, dinner, and game night with judges. Click here for a registration form. Austin Bar and AYLA members should be receiving the conference brochure in the next couple of days. However, due to an unanticipated glitch in our database, some of the firm addresses were mixed up. If you haven't received your conference brochure, please check the Web site for an electronic copy or contact the Austin Bar at 472-0279.

Women Attorneys Invited to Share Their Stories

The American Bar Association Commission on Women in the Profession is developing a new book entitled, "The Road to Independence: A Woman's Guide to Forming Her Own Law Firm." This volume will be a collection of letters (maximum 4 pages double-spaced) focusing on the experiences, challenges, and opportunities of women-owned law firms. The Commission is seeking women who have formed their own firms - whether as a solo, with other women, or with men; it is not necessary that the women currently be owners of their firms. The book's audience is primarily women who are thinking about starting their own law firms as well as those who already have taken that step.

If you are interested in offering your insight into these important issues or know someone else who has started her own firm, please send name/contact information to Barbara Leff, Commission on Women Communications and Publications Manager, at leffb@staff.abanet.org.

Invitation letters will start to be sent in early April. For more information about the book and the procedures for submitting letters, please click here.
