Texas House Judiciary and Civil Jurisprudence Committee Meeting, May 26

Date: Wednesday, May 26

The Texas House Judiciary and Civil Jurisprudence Committee will conduct an interim hearing on two issues, barratry and evidence standards in mesothelioma lawsuits.

The Judiciary and Civil Jurisprudence Committee has broad jurisdiction over legislation pertaining to civil law, probate, and guardianship matters. The committee has jurisdiction over all appellate courts in the state including the Texas Supreme Court and the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals.

Committee members will discuss current barratry laws in Texas and their adequacy in protecting citizens from unscrupulous attorney behavior. The burden of proof and damage calculations related to mesothelioma lawsuits and false advertising claims are also on the agenda.

Invited and public testimony will be taken at the hearing. The hearing will also stream live.

A monthly education and support group for lawyers, judges, and law students seeking help or support while healing from depression, addiction, job stress, anxiety, and other mental health issues.

This month's meeting will feature Sharyn Reynolds, founder of the Stress Reduction Clinic and Weavings Wellness Group in Austin. Reynolds will be discussing the benefits of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction to improve health and well being in the midst of a chaotic world.

Two Inn of Court Chapters Seeking Applications

Both the Robert W. Calvert Chapter and Lloyd Lochridge Chapter are accepting applications for new members. Hop to it before the opportunity passes you by!

The Robert W. Calvert Chapter of the American Inn of Court is accepting applications for new members through tomorrow, May 25. The Calvert chapter meets monthly to examine issues related to ethics and professional conduct in the field of law. Applicants should send a letter requesting membership, along with a current resume and two reference letters, to the nominations committee c/o Jody Scheske, Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld, 300 W. 6th St., Suite 2100, Austin, TX 78701 or by e-mail to jscheske@akingump.com.

Applications are also being sought for the Lloyd Lochridge American Inn of Court for lawyers with between one and eight years of experience. The Lloyd Lochridge chapter meets monthly throughout the school year, with each meeting including dinner and a presentation by chapter members or guest speakers on a legal issue through which you earn CLE credit. To apply, e-mail a letter stating your interest in joining the chapter, your resume, and two letters of recommendation.
