Wall Raising for Tamika Nobles' Legal Build a Huge Success

On Saturday, July 18, members of the Austin Bar Association, Tamika Nobles and her family, and many dedicated Habitat for Humanity volunteers gathered at the Legal Build home site for a truly inspiring occasion - the raising of the walls for Tamika's home! It was hot work, but we don't think anyone who was there would have missed it.

Among the participants were: Susan Salch, Sheri Hiroms, and David Greenberg of Cantilo & Bennett, whose $10,000 donation allowed us to begin building; David Sheppard (who nicely provided lunch for the workers); Judge Raul Gonzalez, Justice of the Peace, Pct. #4; Sarah Foster, Haynes and Boone; Kennon Peterson, the Supreme Court's Rules Attorney; Mishell Kneeland and Frank King from the Attorney General's Office; and Jessica Walters, a summer associate from Thompson Coe, along with family members and friends.

A brief ceremony commemorating the start of the project kicked off the day and reminded everyone of the hard work that Habitat for Humanity does every day to ensure that affordable housing is available to hardworking people like Tamika.

Tamika and her friends worked side by side with members of the Austin Bar and volunteers. The group worked hard in the heat but by the end of the day the walls for Tamika's home were in place and the trusses were on the roof, ready for the next group to install. Everyone agreed that it was a rewarding and fulfilling experience! A longer report and pictures are available on Austin Habitat's blog.

Although this represents a terrific milestone for this year's Legal Build, the committee still needs to raise just over $33,000 to complete Tamika's home. Every bit helps. Please consider clicking here and helping them reach their goal so that Tamika can move into a safe home this fall!

School Supply Drive Aims to Make 2009-2010 an A+ Year

New shoes are not the only thing some children are lacking at the beginning of the school year. Many do not have the pencils, paper, or other basic supplies to help them be successful from day one of the new school year.

That is why the Austin Bar and AYLA have partnered with For the Children to contribute to the education of public elementary school students in Travis, Williamson, and Hays counties by procuring and distributing basic school supplies. Campus allocation is based on the number of students qualifying for federal free or reduced-cost lunch programs.

To help start these students off on the right foot, you may bring cash, checks made out to For the Children, or supply donations to the Austin Bar office by Friday, Aug. 7. Don't forget to put a donation box in your office to gently remind co-workers to donate. Click here to learn more about the For the Children program.
