AYLA Holiday Party, Dec. 10
Date: Thursday, Dec. 10
Time: 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Location: Max's Wine Dive, 207 San Jacinto
It's time to bust out the eggnog and mistletoe, and AYLA is happy to usher in the holiday season a little early this Thursday.
Don't forget your pocketbook or wallet since this is a great time of year to donate to those less fortunate through AYLA Holiday Baskets. In its 27th year, Holiday Baskets really needs your help. Read below for further details on this great project.
The goal of the Holiday Baskets Project is to provide groceries, gifts, a legal-resource guide, a holiday card, and (if funds permit) a calling card to 75 local families who need assistance during the holidays. This year, AYLA is working with Blue Santa in an effort to maximize the number of families served and increase the level of donations to each family in need.
AYLA needs volunteers and funds for Holiday Baskets to succeed.
- With assistance from invaluable volunteers, AYLA will deliver the holiday baskets on Saturday, December 19, 2009, beginning at 11:00 a.m. If you want to volunteer, contact Kennon Peterson at kennonpeterson@hotmail.com or 463-4353. You may also donate and volunteer online.
- Donations are fully tax-deductible (your canceled check is your receipt) and for only $135 you can sponsor an entire family! Send checks made payable to AYLA Foundation to Austin Young Lawyers Association, Attn: Debbie Kelly, re: Holiday Baskets, 816 Congress Ave., Suite 700, Austin, Texas 78701.
Thanks for your consideration and happy holidays!

AYLA Seeking Volunteer Mock Trial Judges, Feb. 6
AYLA is seeking volunteers willing to serve as judges for the Central Texas High School Mock Trial Competition on Saturday, Feb. 6. This competition allows teams of high school students from area schools to prepare and present all aspects of a mock trial (opening argument, closing argument, and direct and cross examination of several witnesses). The winning team advances to the State Mock Trial Competition in Dallas with possible advancement to the national competition.
Mock trial experience is not necessary to serve as a judge. There is virtually no advance preparation needed (all judges will receive information describing the relevant issues). The time commitment is minimal--each round lasts approximately two hours--and CLE credit is available. The competition will take place in the Travis County Courthouse at 1000 Guadalupe.
If you can volunteer a couple of hours to help potential future lawyers, please contact AYLA Mock Trial Committee co-chairs Nicki Glauser at nglauser@velaw.com or Brad Compere at bcompere@hernandezsimpson.com.
