LRS is a nonprofit public service providing information about consumer service organizations and government agencies that may assist, as well as direct referrals to lawyers who have been screened and qualified. LRS provides an initial 30 minute consultation with a lawyer for only $20.

LegalLine - Free Legal Advice Hotline
Call 512-472-8303 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday of every month for LegalLine, the free legal advice hotline that answers legal questions over the telephone. Sponsored by the Lawyer Referral Service of Central Texas, LegalLine is staffed by attorney volunteers who answer legal questions and give brief legal advice.

People's Law School
A community service organized by the Austin Bar Association, UT Law School,and the Lawyer Referral Service. The People's Law School features basic classes in many types of law taught by attorney volunteers. The events are held in February (UT Law School) and September (ACC Eastview Campus).

Domestic Violence

SafePlace
SafePlace 24-hour Hotline for domestic violence or sexual assault survivors 512-267-SAFE (7233) or TTY 927-9616. SafePlace provides counseling, shelter, hospital advocacy, and legal advocacy for women, children, teen, and male survivors of sexual or domestic violence. Assist with obtaining protective orders and other legal assistance. Call the hotline to access services or learn about SafePlace programs.

Texas Advocacy Project
Texas Advocacy Project is a nonprofit organization working directly with victims, shelters, law enforcement agencies, and courts across Texas to deliver effective legal services to Texans in need. Texas Advocacy Project provides free legal services statewide to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking.

Low Income

Texas RioGrande Legal Aid - Austin Office
Call 888-988-9996 or 512-374-2700 (Austin) 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.  Monday through Friday for general civil legal services. Texas RioGrande Legal Aid is a nonprofit organization that provides free civil and criminal legal services to low income residents in 68 counties of Southwest Texas. To qualify for free legal services from TRLA, an applicant must meet the income, asset, and immigration requirements.

Veterans

Free Legal Advice Clinic
The Austin Bar Association organizes a free legal advice clinic once a month at the Austin VA Outpatient Clinic, 2901 Montopolis Drive, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for all U.S. Veterans. There is no appointment necessary; please sign-in by noon. Attorney volunteers will provide brief, legal advice (15-20 minutes). Please bring any paperwork that is relevant to your case. If you are seeking veteran's benefits or a discharge upgrade, please bring a copy of your DD214 and any evidence related to your claim. The next clinic will be Monday, Jan. 30, 2012.

Filing a Grievance with the State Bar of Texas - Questions & Answers
800-932-1900 Allegations of misconduct by an attorney are very serious, and are reviewed carefully by the Office of the Chief Disciplinary Counsel. If you believe that an attorney has violated the Texas Disciplinary Rules of Professional Conduct, you may report this information to the State Bar in the form of a grievance.
