Topic: The Pledge Music Crowdfunding Debacle
Speaker: Chris Castle, founder of Christian L. Castle; Jesse Moore, Texas Department of Banking; Peter C. Ruggero, Ruggero Law Firm PC

Please join ESLABA to learn about the effect of the collapse of PledgeMusic.com, a crowdfunding platform for artists that has failed to distribute a significant portion of the funds it has collected for more than a year. Veteran music lawyer Chris Castle together with consumer protection and bankruptcy lawyers Jesse Moore and Peter C. Ruggero will analyze the effects on artists, the rights of consumers and vendors of this collapse and the potential future outcomes if PledgeMusic does not solve its financial crisis and seeks protection of the insolvency and bankruptcy. Pizza to be provided.

Speaker Bios:

Chris Castle (christiancastle.com): Christian L. Castle is the founder of Christian L. Castle, Attorneys based in Austin, Texas. A native Texan, Chris moved the firm to Austin in 2011 and currently represents artists and songwriters in traditional music industry matters, television production companies, music-related technology startups and clients in public policy matters.

Prior to founding the firm in Los Angeles in 2005, Chris was Senior Vice President of Business & Legal Affairs and General Counsel at SNOCAP, Inc. in San Francisco, of counsel to Wilson

Sonsini in Palo Alto, Senior Vice President, Business Affairs at Sony Music in New York and Vice President Legal and Business Affairs at A&M Records in Hollywood. He is admitted in Texas and California, received his MBA from the UCLA Anderson Graduate School of Management, his JD from the UCLA School of Law where he was an Olin Fellow in Law and Economics and a member of the UCLA Law Review, and his BA magna cum laude from UCLA. Chris received the 2016 Texas Star Award from the State Bar of Texas.

Jesse Moore (Texas Department of Banking): Jesse Moore went to college and law school (and pre-school) at the University of Texas at Austin and was admitted to the State Bar of Texas in 2006. He began his legal career clerking for the Hon. Barbara J. Houser, Chief U.S. Bankruptcy Judge for the Northern District of Texas, and then practiced from 2007 to 2019 at Hunton & Williams and Dykema Cox Smith. His practice included litigation and transactional work relating to bankruptcy, finance, and financial regulation. He recently joined the Texas Department of Banking as Assistant General Counsel. Jesse has been selected as a Rising Star by Texas Super Lawyers from 2015 through 2019 and currently serves as President for the Bankruptcy Section of the Austin Bar Association and Treasurer for the Financial Institutions Section.

Peter C. Ruggero: Peter C. Ruggero is a business bankruptcy and collections lawyer in Austin, Texas.  His state and nationwide practice focuses on business litigation in and outside of bankruptcy court. He focuses on creditor representation and is regularly appointed as a post-judgment turnover receiver.

Mr. Ruggero received his law degree (JD) from South Texas College of Law in Houston and his Master of Laws (LLM) in Bankruptcy from St. John’s University in New York City.  He is Board Certified in Business Bankruptcy by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.

Mr. Ruggero has been selected as a Rising Star by Texas Super Lawyers from 2012 through He previously served as President for the Bankruptcy Section of the Austin Bar Association and as Secretary of the Central Texas Chapter of the Turnaround Management Association. He is a member of the College of the State Bar of Texas and a Contributing Author to the Texas Collections Manual. He regularly publishes articles and lectures on various creditor and bankruptcy legal issues.

Prior to operating his own law firm, he practiced law in the bankruptcy practice group of Haynes and Boone, LLP and also in the bankruptcy and collections division of the Texas Attorney General’s Office. When not working, you can find Mr. Ruggero with his wife Jen, three kids Conley, Kate and Campbell, and dog Oliver enjoying good food and the outdoors.
