Topic: Adolescents, Substance Misuse and Recovery High Schools
Speaker: Julie McElrath, Executive Director of University High School and Youth Recovery Network

High school is often associated with binge drinking and experimentation with substances. Alcohol and other drug misuse is pervasive among adolescents. For students who have struggled with substance misuse and on a path of recovery, the mainstream school environment can be a tremendous challenge. This presentation will address the prevalence of substance misuse among adolescents and how schools can help. How can school staff be of support? What are the steps to take for getting help for a student and their family? What are the available community resources? University High School is a recovery school and a community partner that supports students and families in Austin, Central Texas, and now across the nation. Specifically designed for high school students who have struggled with substance misuse and are seeking recovery, UHS provides an opportunity for it students to discover, to learn, and to grow through a unique educational and social experience. What makes us different from a regular high school? How exactly do recovery high schools function? Who are the students that utilize this type of program? Come learn about recovery high schools, and about how communities can come together to best support young people and their families.
