Judge Byrne’s Free CLE Series

Topic: Intersection of Race, Domestic Violence and the Child Welfare System
Speakers: The Texas Cohort: Judge Aurora Martinez Jones, Shellie Ryan (Texas Council on Family Violence), Eloise Sepeda (SAFE), Kimberly Vincent (CAFA attorney), and Tanya Rollins (DFPS)

Discussion on race will include historical information specific to the child welfare system, criminal justice system and the City of Austin. Discussion on domestic violence will include how survivors navigate the criminal justice system and child welfare system as well as fundamental education on the dynamics of power and control in relationships with domestic violence. Discussion on the child welfare system will include education on children’s rights, legislation affecting the child welfare system, including the Indian Child Welfare act, as well as the growing racial disproportionality evident in the child welfare system, specific to Texas and specific to Travis County.
