Topic: Advocating for LGBTQ+ children in child welfare cases
Speakers: Darcie DeShazo, Executive Director of The Settlement Home for Children; Lena Lockwood, CPS Conservatorship for Travis County; Dr. Richard K. Yuen, Ph. D., Licensed Psychologist; Lindsey Dionne, Co-chair LGBT Section of the Austin Bar

A panel of speakers will provide different perspectives on best practices and approaches for advocating for LGBTQ+ children involved with Child Protective Services. Discussion will include how laws regarding child well-being and foster care affect the rights of LGBTQ+ children as well as ethical obligations in competency for lawyers with an LGBTQ+ child client. Cultural competency, bias, and obstacles with current systemic policies and procedures will be explored as well.
