AYLA Day of Service – January 16, 2017 (General Information):
In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the Austin Young Lawyers Association will coordinate its fifth annual Day of Service project in Austin on Monday, January 16, 2017. This local project is modeled after the national Martin Luther King Day of Service, which is intended to transform Dr. King’s life and teachings into community service that helps solve social problems. AYLA invites the Austin legal community to sign up for one or more of the events available for the Day of Service. In addition, please encourage family and friends to volunteer as well.
Volunteer Event Descriptions
Austin Animal Center (Morning Dog Walking Project):
The Austin Animal Center is seeking 16 volunteers from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. to give adoptable dogs time out of their kennels with walking and other forms of interaction. Volunteers must be at least 17 years of age, and there must be at least one adult for every child of age 15 or 16. Austin Animal Center (Afternoon Enrichment Project):
The Austin Animal Center is also hosting a child-friendly volunteer event in the afternoon from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. This enrichment opportunity is available for 5-15 volunteers, ages 5-17 (with at least one parent/guardian) and 17+. Enrichment groups will be stuffing Kongs with dog food, preparing puzzle toys and other dog treats, making dog or cat toys, and other projects. Sometimes the groups will assist with distributing enrichment to animals. These groups usually work indoors, and may or may not have direct animal interaction.
Austin Parks Foundation Project:
The Austin Parks Foundation is seeking approximately 16 volunteers from 9:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m. to assist with mulching trees at the Polo Fields at Zilker Park. For this specific event, please register on Signup.com as well as with the Austin Parks Foundation’s registration site, https://austinparks.givepulse.com/event/34583-Zilker-Park-Mulching-trees. Children are welcome to attend this project, but adults will need to indicate they are bringing children when signing up with Austin Parks Foundation.
BookSpring is seeking 10 – 15 volunteers from 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. to help with sorting donated books at BookSpring’s facility on the campus of Blanton Elementary School. These donated books are used in BookSpring’s Reach Out and Read program, which places books in the hands of children through medical providers at clinics around the city. Austin Children’s Shelter
The Austin Children’s Shelter is seeking 10 volunteers to assist with organized competitions with children who are staying at the shelter from 10:00 – 11:30 a.m. All volunteers must be at least 21 years of age.
