About
The Austin Bar's initiative for 2024-25 is Stop the Stigma, an effort to destigmatize conversations surrounding mental health and substance use disorders in the legal profession.
The initiative is the brainchild of Austin Bar President Mary-Ellen King. Watch the short video below to learn more.
The initiative has two primary ways of spreading information about resources and stories of recovery: The Stop the Stigma podcast and articles written for Austin Lawyer.
The podcast
The Stop the Stigma podcast is available on YouTube, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and all other podcast platforms. We interview individuals who have or who are struggling with mental health and/or substance use issues. We are also interested in interviewing the loved ones of these individuals to learn how they acted as support systems. Finally, we are interested in interviewing professionals who treat these issues.
If you are interested in appearing on the podcast, please email billy@austinbar.org.
Austin Lawyer
Austin Lawyer is the Austin Bar's premier publication, a monthly magazine of both substantive law articles, as well as human interest stories, produced for our members and available in both print and digital formats.
As part of her presidency, Mary-Ellen King has decided to devote her monthly President's Column to stories shared by individuals who have been affected by mental health and/or substance use issues.

If you are interested in writing a guest column for Austin Lawyer, please email billy@austinbar.org.
